Fennville High Team Wins First Game with out Star Player

HOLLAND, Mich – The tributes continue for a west Michigan high school basketball player who died from a heart ailment after making a game-winning shot.

The undefeated Fennville High team won its first game without star Wes Leonard on Monday. The Blackhawks beat Lawrence, 65-54, in front of about 3,500 fans at Hope College in the first round of a state tournament.

Leonard’s funeral is Tuesday in Holland. Then Fennville is scheduled to play a second-round district tournament game on Wednesday.

Leonard died Thursday shortly after making a game-winning shot in his team’s final regular season game. An autopsy showed he died of cardiac arrest due to an enlarged heart.
