Jones, Monroe, Washington Counties Pass Sales Taxes


MIDDLE GEORGIA (41NBC/WMGT) – Voters in Jones, Monroe and Washington counties approved several separate sales tax referendums to fund a list of projects.

In Monroe County, voters passed the Education Special Local Option Sales Tax in a vote of 610 to 216. The education tax is expected to raise about $30 million for the county and will fund several projects including construction for a brand new fine arts center.

The education referendum in Jones County also passed in a vote of 870 to 182. The sales tax revenue will be used to repair and renovate school buildings, in addition to buying equipment, textbooks and funding other projects.

In Washington County, voters gave the go ahead for the $18 million Special Local Options Sales Tax.

The tax will be used to pay for a new county jail, improve transportation and road repairs.
