Mercer women’s golf finishes strong at John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. (MERCER RELEASE) – Senior Lacey Fears booked her fifth top-10 placement of the year on Tuesday while leading the Mercer women’s golf team to a tie for fifth place at the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate.

Mercer opened the day in ninth place and jumped into a tie for fifth by shooting 294 on Tuesday. The Bears’ three-day total of 912 equaled the effort of Kennesaw State and left the team just five strokes behind Middle Tennessee. Campbell captured the team title with a score of 876.

Fears fired her best round of the event on Tuesday, carding a 1-under 71 to finish in a tie for eighth place overall. The Bonaire, Ga. native registered two birdies in her final four holes to close the event at 222 and finish ahead of 82 other competitors.

Senior Mary Alice Murphy tied for 29th in the individual standings with a three-day total of 231. Murphy shot 3-over 75 on Tuesday after collecting scores of 79 and 77 on Sunday and Monday.

Freshman Katy Harris highlighted Mercer’s play on Tuesday, booking a 2-under 70 that marked the team’s low round at the event. Harris notched four birdies in her final 14 holes to finish the event in a tie for 32nd at 232.

Junior Sarah Louie Brown also tied for 32nd place after using 78 strokes in the final round. Brown’s 78 combined with scores of 80 and 74 in the first two rounds.

Freshman Haley Austin rounded out Mercer’s competitors with a tie for 47th place at 236. Austin shot 79 on Tuesday after opening with scores of 80 and 77.

Mercer now heads to Atlantic Sun Championship, to be contested at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Jekyll Island on April 15-16.
