BAGHDAD (AP) – Officials in Iraq say suicide bombings and other attacks have killed at least 30 people and wounded nearly 70 more today.

The deadliest attack took place in a town south of Baghdad (Suwayrah) where a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden car into a police checkpoint, killing five policemen and seven civilians. A police officer says 19 people were wounded.

Bombings and gun attacks have become a near daily occurrence as the country counts down to parliamentary elections on April 30. It will be Iraq’s first nationwide vote since the U.S. military withdrawal in 2011.

Over the past year, violence has surged in Iraq to levels unseen since 2008. The United Nations says 8,868 people were killed there last year.
