Kevin Dowdell, director of sales and marketing at the Macon Centreplex, says a team could be back on the ice as early as next year, as long as a deal is approved in the coming weeks.
Dowdell will speak to Macon-Bibb Commission members about the team Tuesday. He says if a deal is worked out soon, the team could be moved into the Centreplex by the end of the summer and start play in 2015.
The Augusta Riverhawks of the Southern Indoor Professional Hockey League (SPHL) were forced to shut down operations for the 2013 season after the arena’s cooling system stopped making ice.
Dowdell says that is the team that could come to Macon, but the team’s owner and general manager must also approve the move.
The Macon Whoopees brought minor league hockey to the Coliseum in the 1970s. That team was followed in the late 90s and early 2000s by the Macon Whoopee. The Macon Trax played there from 2002-2004.
Tuesday’s meeting starts at 5.
