Gutierrez named To Mexico’s U-20 World Cup roster

ATHENS, Ga. (UGA ATHLETICS RELEASE) – Georgia soccer incoming freshman Mariel Gutierrez has been named to the 21-player roster for the upcoming 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, it was announced this week by the Mexican Football Federation.

The World Cup will be played in Canada Aug. 5-24, with Gutierrez’s squad making its fifth straight trip and sixth overall.

The defender from Mexico City in January was named to the CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship Best XI team for her play in helping Mexico to a runner-up finish.

Mexico will take on Nigeria in its opening game of Group C action on Aug. 6, before meeting England on Aug. 9 and Korea Republic on Aug. 13.

The Bulldogs open preseason camp on Wed., Aug. 6 and will play an exhibition scrimmage on the road at Clemson on Sun., Aug. 10. The season officially begins for Georgia with a meeting at Ole Miss on Aug. 22 in Oxford – one of the first events to be carried live on the brand new SEC Network.
