MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Christmas is almost here and many parents are still picking the perfect toy for their children, but some toys can be very dangerous.

When it comes to toy safety some parents have concerns.

"If the pieces are too small or comes with 101 pieces I’m not going to buy it," Jessica Smith, mother of two said.

Smith says she wants to get them the toys they want, but she doesn’t want that to be a fatal mistake.

Some parents will stick to brand names, but those toys can also pose a threat.

"You would hope they’ve done a lot of research and testing on the toy before it comes to market" Charlotte Hall, mother of four said.

The Georgia Public Interest Research Group held a news conference Tuesday, to advise parents on toy safety.

"Toxic hazards, lead, cadmium, and chemicals called phthalates are toxic substances and we found some toys that exceed the allowable limit of these substances," Michael Sikora with Georgia, PIRG said.

The consumer product safety commission regulates toy safety standards.

According to reports, there have been 30 toy recalls this year.

"Leading cause of recalls in the United States is choking hazards. These are toys that have small parts or too small for children under three." said Sikora.

The owner of William’s Fun Smart Toy Store encourages parents to watch their children closely.

"Play with their toys with them. If you notice a toy is wearing out or there is a broken piece, pull it out of their repertoire of toys." owner, Florence Allen said

That may not make your child happy, but parents like Jessica and Charlotte will keep their children safe.
