ROBERTA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Three people accused of running a dog fighting ring in Crawford County have been denied bond.

28-year-old Robert Wayne Durham, 22-year-old John Russell Cail and 25-year-old Jeffrey Bassett Armstrong are all charged with six counts of cruelty to animals.

The three men are also facing two counts of aggravated cruelty to animals. They were arrested New Year’s Day at a home located at 1130 Hopewell Road in Roberta.

Residents who live nearby aren’t happy.

"It’s just real sad to know somebody–a dog owner–would put dogs through something like that," says Oneal Gibson Jr.

Gibson isn’t alone.

"It’s wrong,” says Felicia Turner. “It’s a disgrace to the community also, and I don’t see how anybody would want to treat anyone or anything like that."

Sheriff Lewis Walker says the dog fighting ring is still under investigation. The sheriff’s office is working to determine if the men were also gambling during the dog fights.

Walker says the three men could face additional charges and there more suspects could be arrested.
