The federal holiday was first observed in 1986 and became an official holiday in all U.S. states in 2000.
Below is a list of events happening across Middle Georgia.
The annual MLK Day Unity March will begin at 10 a.m. at West Mortuaryon Drayton Street in Montezuma. Following the Unity March, the annual MLK Day commemorative program will commence at First United Holiness Church at 324 Engram Street in Montezuma.
The 25th Annual MLK Jr Breakfast starts at 7:30 a.m. and will be held at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church at 131 Ward Street in downtown Macon.
MLK Jr March in Macon begins at 11 a.m. The march starts at four different locations–the Booker T Washington Center, the Frank Johnson Center, Memorial Gym and the Rosa Jackson Center. They will all march downtown to the Macon-Bibb Goverment Center.
There is a MLK Jr program from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rosa Parks Square. The event will feature arts, entertainment and food.
At 12:15, there is a MLK, Jr. Memorial Celebration at Steward Chapel A.M.E Church on 887 Forsyth Street.
The Tubman African American Museum is hosting a MLK guided tour at 2:00 p.m. at 340 Walnut Street in Macon.
Georgia College and State University is coordinating with several community groups for Martin Luther King Jr. Day events.
At 9 a.m., there will be a service project at Baldwin County Schools.
There will be a commemorative march at noon, beginning at Huley Park and ending at Flagg Chapel Baptist Church in Milledgeville.
A MLK tribute service will be held at 1 p.m. at the Arts and Sciences Auditorium at Georgia College in Milledgeville.
There is a community cookout at Huley Park in Milledgeville starting at 3 p.m. There will be food and a panel discussion.
