Christians celebrate Ash Wednesday

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Millions of Christians around the world are celebrating Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent.  This is the time where Catholics are encouraged to fast, pray, and give up something of importance to them.

There were several masses held today across Middle Georgia.  Mount De Sales Academy in Macon had a special service to teach students the meaning of the religious holiday.

"It’s a call to repentance so we can make the journey with the Lord, through Calvary to the glory of his resurrection," says Father Godfred Boachie-Yiadom.

One student from the school tells 41NBC, she’s giving up Facebook, and hopes she can stay committed.

Lent represents the 40 days that Jesus spent fasting in the desert and was tempted by evil.  Due to the calendar, the number of days for Lent varies.  This year the season lasts for 46 days and will end on Easter Sunday.
