Former Milledgeville mayor arrested for insurance fraud

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Former Milledgeville mayor Richard Bentley was arrested on Monday for insurance fraud.

Bentley is charged with seven counts of misappropriation of premiums and five counts of issuing fraudulent certificates. The GBI and the state insurance department say the 52-year-old, who owned the Wilkerson Insurance Agency, is accused of keeping $34,000 in payments he received from customers.

He’s also accused of converting the money to his own use instead of sending it to the appropriate insurer.

Bentley faces up to $10,000 in fines or up to 10 years in prison.
