Early voting for Milledgeville mayor ends Friday

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Early voting in the special election for Milledgeville mayor ends Friday.

City residents have until 5 p.m. to cast their ballots at the Baldwin County courthouse.

Melba Burrell, Floyd Griffin, and Gary Thrower are running for mayor. The winner will finish the two and a half year term, after former Mayor Richard Bentley resigned earlier this year.

Election officials say turnout it a little above average for the city. More than 900 people, approximately 14%, out of 6,000 registered voters have cast their ballots. They are expecting more votes once all of the absentee ballots are collected.

"We’ve sent out over 250 and we have received back about 169," Elizabeth Rodgers, the chief deputy registrar for Baldwin County said. "We do have some still out that we hope to receive by the close of polls on Tuesday."

Voters will need to have a photo ID when they go to cast their ballots. Election Day is Tuesday, June 16.
