Co-founder of Lane Packing Company honored with memorial bridge

FORT VALLEY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The man responsible for making Lane Southern Orchards a success was honored Wednesday with a state highway bridge.

The "John David Duke Lane Sr. Memorial Bridge" is over Interstate 75 on State Route 96 in Fort Valley.

Lane passed away in December at the age of 87. His son says the family didn’t know lawmakers were working to get a resolution signed by the governor for the bridge.

"This is a great, great honor,” says John David Duke Lane Jr. “He would be very, very humbled to have this bridge over this interstate named after him. I never ever would’ve thought anything like this would have happened."

Representative Patty Bentley says the entire Georgia General Assembly approved her resolution for the bridge.

"As state representative for this area, I wanted to do something to honor his life and legacy and the contributions he made so greatly to the great state of Georgia,” says Bentley.”

Lawmakers presented the governor’s signed resolution and highway bridge signs to his son and wife.
