NFL player hosts camp for Hawkinsville children

HAWKINSVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A hometown hero is giving back to his community.

Hawkinsville native and Carolina Panther Charles Johnson is hosting his annual Sports Academy and Community Weekend. To thank him for all he’s done for his community, Johnson received the key to the city. A new scoreboard with his name on it was also unveiled. The Big Red Booster Club bought it using a donation from Johnson.

"I’m from here,” says Johnson. “It means a lot when I come back and give. Just to show the kids, if I can do it, anybody else can do it and plus a lot of people that support it."

Johnson gave away more than 500 NFL Carolina Panthers jerseys.

The fourth Annual Sports Academy continues Saturday at Hawkinsville High School from 10 a.m until 2:30 p.m. There will be football, tennis and cheerleading clinics. It is a free event for boys and girls in 1st through 12th grades.
