Mercer upsets No. 3 Chattanooga

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Mercer forced four turnovers, including two in the fourth quarter, on its way to a 17-14 win over No. 3 Chattanooga Saturday at Five Star Stadium.

Quarterback John Russ had two touchdowns on the day, scoring once through the air and once on the ground. The junior from Buford completed nine of 19 passes for 162 yards and added 56 yards on 15 carries.

Senior quarterback Jacob Huesman led the way for for Chattanooga (7-2, 5-1 Southern Conference), scoring twice on the ground on a day that saw him rush 24 times for 112 yards. Huesman completed 15 of 21 passes for 197 yards but was unable to find the end zone through the air and threw two interceptions.

Leading 17-14 with less than five minutes to play, Zach Jackson intercepted Huesman’s pass at the Mercer 16. The Bears (4-5, 1-4 SoCon) were able to get two first downs, including one on 4th and 1 at the Chattanooga 42, to run out the clock for their first Southern Conference win of the season.
