GC men’s basketball starts conference season with 65-55 win over USC Aiken

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (GC RELEASE) – On the strength of the team’s best defensive effort this season, the Georgia College Men’s Basketball team (8-2, 1-0 PBC) topped USC Aiken (2-6, 0-1 PBC) 65-55 in front of a packed house Wednesday afternoon in the Centennial Center on Baldwin County Schools Day.

With all public school third through eighth graders on hand the Bobcats didn’t disappoint, leading nearly from pillar to post. The Pacers had just three leads, 3-0, 5-3 and 7-5, before Georgia College took over for the final 35:44 of the contest.

The win gives Bobcat men’s hoops eight victories on the season, tops in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC), breaking the tie with 7-2 Lander University.

Senior Dwight Anderson (Minneapolis, Minnesota) hit a three at the 15:44 mark for an 8-7 advantage, the first lead of the game for the Bobcats, one they would not relinquish. The advantage reached its height early in the second half at 34-21, when freshman Issac Thomas (Trion) made a lay-in off a pass from Anderson.

The 55 points scored by the Pacers are a season best for the Bobcat defense, the 36.4 shooting percentage marking the sixth time this season the Bobcats held an opponent below 40 percent.

Anderson finished with 12 points, three assists and a pair of rebounds, including a scorching 4-for-5 from long range. Senior Terrell Harris (Indiantown, Florida) paced the Bobcats at 17 points, six boards and four helps.

Classmate Rio McMillian (Chicago Heights, Illinois) had 10 points and six rebounds to lead the bench brigade. Sophomore Mark McCorkle (Cumming) and freshman Chaz Berry (Fayetteville) added nine and seven points respectively, as the Bobcat bench out-scored USCA’s 26-4.

GC Men’s Basketball improves to 2-0 in conference openers under head coach Mark Gainous.

The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Dec. 19 at 3:30 p.m., hosting UNC Pembroke (6-4, 0-1 PBC). The Braves play at Columbus State University Thursday night before taking on Georgia College.
