Restaurant Report Card: Lil’ Benny’s Smokehouse

Macon, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – “Community–above all things they have embraced us,” said Lil’ Benny’s Smokehouse owner Benny Burks.

Who wouldn’t love a barbecue place that serves “OooWee” sauce?

“People say never say everything is good, but everything is good!” said Burks.

Owner Benny Burks, a.k.a. Lil Benny, is confident you’ll eat well at Lil Benny’s Smokehouse at 881 Wimbish Drive.

“The ribs are the top of the line, the pulled pork is delicious, I have the best Brunswick stew in the southeast hands down,” said Burks.

But first, here’s a restaurant that needs to step it up this week.

USA Deli on Columbus Drive scored a 75.

They didn’t clean the old wing sauce pans from the night before, the had glue and eye drops stored next to food, and the had some food stored on the floor.

Other scores this week:

Chen’s Wok on Northside Drive – 97

Greek Corner Pizza on Vineville Avenue – 85

Guitarras Mexican Grill on Tom Hill Senior Boulevard – 82

Jersey Mike’s Subs on Riverside Drive – 100

Kum O Restaurant on Hawkinsville Road – 95

Milo & Ronda’s Homestyle Cooking on Arkwright Road – 87

Natalia’s on North Macon Street – 100

Shelly’s on Mulberry Street – 91

Silly’s Lilly Restaurant on Pittman Street – 91

Steak Out on Riverside Drive – 98

U.S. Deli on Pio Nono Avenue – 87

Good scores this week.

Lil Benny’s pride and joy is his restaurant, but more specifically his Brunswick Stew.

“You should be able to stick that spoon in the pot and it stands straight up,” said Burks. “That is traditional Brunswick Stew.”

Lil Benny puts his menu together with his family’s help–including his wife, Ms. Benny.

“The mac ‘n cheese, the smoked dressing, Ms. Benny’s sweet tea, absolutely magnificent,” said Burks.

Lil Benny’s passion for cooking is smoking hot.

“I am so passionate about what I do–you can put a fire on this floor and I’ll cook on it,” said Burks.

Plus the perfect health inspection is hanging out on the wall.

“We have a hard working crew here,” said Burks. “My wife, my son, my niece, and that’s it for right now but they’re very hard workers and again I’m so pleased for that–I’m thankful for it.”

Lil Benny’s Smokehouse is making the grade this week.
