MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A new elementary school in Macon is nearing completion for its scheduled August opening.
Veterans Elementary School, which is being built on the site of the former Morgan Elementary School, is a new 109,000 square foot education facility that began construction in June of last year.
“Once school let out of May last year, we started demolition at the old site in June and construction followed right afterwards,” said Jason Daniel, the Executive Director of Capital Programs for the Bibb County School District, “We’re expected to be done in mid-May.”
The new facility is being used to consolidate Morgan Elementary and Barden Elementary Schools, with both of them slated to be closed at the end of the 2015-2016 school year.
The interior of Veterans currently resembles more of a construction site than a place where students can learn their ABC’s, but new principal Cleveland Johnson knows progress is being made and is eager to help usher in a new era.
“It’s a very exciting experience,” Johnson said. “I know a lot of principals wait their whole careers to have that experience of being able to bring a new school to fruition.”
Johnson is also looking forward to seeing how the children will react upon arriving at the new building on their first day, “I hope they feel excited about this beautifully crafted building… and know that their students are going to have an excellent experience everyday here at Veterans Elementary.”
“We want them to know that school is a place for learning, but also for fun,” Johnson said.
Before coming to Macon, Johnson served as an assistant principal in Clayton County.
The name for the new school was chosen by a naming committee, which was appointed by the Bibb County Board of Education.
Veterans Elementary will include 46 classrooms, a gymnasium, and both a media and computer lab. The price tag for the project was stated at around $16.7 million.
