MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A back-to-school supply giveaway was held Wednesday afternoon at Southwest High School on Williamson Road.
Event organizers were on hand to pass out pencils, pens, crayons, notebooks, and backpacks to nearly a thousand people. Games were also available for children to enjoy, as well as free refreshments like pizza and snow cones. They even had a chance to visit with McGruff the Crime Dog, the internationally known crime prevention mascot.
“Children obtaining an education is key,” said Ira Foster, an organizer and member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. “We realize that in order to be successful, you have to stay in school and graduate, that’s the foundation. So we want to do our part in trying to help children here in Bibb County succeed and become future leaders.”
Aside from Alpha Phi Alpha, other organizations that helped put on the event included the Macon Bar Association, the Bibb County School District, and health care provider Amerigroup.
“By doing this program, this our small part in helping children succeed here in Bibb County,” Foster added.
This is the fourth year the giveaway has been held. Last year, Foster says nearly 1,200 people attended the event.
