MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Veterans Elementary School held its ribbon cutting ceremony for its new, state-of-the-art building on Thursday.
The school has nearly 800 students after combining the former Morgan and Barden Elementary Schools.
“Our goal is to teach students wherever they come from, whatever previous school they went too,” Principal Dr. Cleveland Johnson III said. ” We have students that are still coming from outside the district.”
The school was built using funds from the 2010 Capital Program’s Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (ESPLOST). It occupies the property that used to be Morgan Elementary.
“It’s amazing, it’s so exciting to be in a brand new building,” Johnson III said. “The colors, the structure, the technology, it’s really student-friendly. This building was put together for students and I love it.”
Each classroom contains a Clear Touch Panel, which are large tablets that act as a computer, whiteboard and video player. According to the Clear Touch website, the panels are the next generation in classroom technology.
Assistant Principal Dr. Arrika Turnstell is excited about the school year and new building. She’s ready to teach.
“We are developing Veteran Heroes,” she said. “Children that exemplify honor and integrity, excellence in everything they do, show respect and responsibility and take ownership of their actions”
Her favorite part of the new building is an outdoor amphitheater, the first school in Bibb County to have one.
“We love it, the students absolutely love it,” Turnstell said. “We have the opportunity to have class outside to do stage plays and things of that nature so it’s my favorite part.”
