Cochran Mayor Michael Stoy steps down

COCHRAN, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Cochran Mayor Michael Stoy has resigned.

Stoy wrote a resignation letter and gave to the city manager and council members at a city council meeting Tuesday evening.

Stoy claims some of the council members held an illegal meeting in the lobby of city hall back on July 26 to discuss city business.

He says the city charter states, city business is to be done in open forums and goes against city ethics.

Stoy tells us there is video of the four councilmen meeting, but no audio.

In the letter Stoy said the four council members who held the illegal meeting are Gary Ates, Fleming Gilman, Andrew Lemmon and Jon Thrower.

Mayor Pro-Tem Gary Ates will take over as acting mayor.

Residents will vote for a new mayor next year.
