Medical Monday: Back pain

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Approximately 80 to 90 percent of Americans will report experiencing back pain at one point in their life. It is especially common in elderly people.

That’s according to Dr. Ryan Schnetzer, Spine Surgeon at Coliseum Northside Hospital. He stopped by the 41NBC studio to talk more about back pain.

There are multiple symptoms that require immediate medical attention, such as numbness or pain in legs and urinary or bowel problems. Those could be a sign of nerve damage and may require surgery.

Dr. Schnetzer advises people be careful when lifting weights or moving furniture. Be sure to lift with your legs and not with your back. Smoking also increases the likelihood of back pain.
