MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery will soon see some major expansion on its 40 acres of cemetery ground.
The Department of Veterans Affairs awarded Georgia’s Department of Veterans services more than $2.4 million.
With that money, they’ll develop 15 more acres of the cemetery into space they can use for burials. Linda Lavender with the Department of Veteran Services says it could help more than 100,000 veterans and their families.
“It’s gonna give more opportunity for veterans to be buried and their families and possibly dependent children to be buried here in our cemetery.”
Lavender says they’ll begin construction on the project Monday. They expect it to be complete within a year.
The property is 140 acres in total but with the addition of 15 more acres for burial grounds, that will make the total go from 40 to 55 acres.
