Warner Robins church using text line to raise money for hurricane victims

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A church in Warner Robins is raising money for Hurricane Harvey victims with a text line.

Southside Baptist Church’s pastor, Jerry Walls, says the idea came to him Monday morning, after seeing the devastation in Houston.

“I knew sending out a quick post on Facebook that [the community] would respond,” Walls said. “The Lord put it on my heart that we needed to reach out now and help people so I called my tech people and said hey we need to get on social media and see what we can do to raise money.”

Walls’ team came up with a phone number people can text to send money to the hundreds of thousands of hurricane victims. The church sent out a Facebook post, asking people to text the number 478-216-2199 with a dollar amount and the word ‘Houston.’ Then, you’ll receive a short form to fill out. All of the money goes to the victims of Hurricane Harvey.

“I have one of the most giving churches I know of, they’re even willing to give to the point of sacrifice,” Wall said. “I knew sending out a quick post on Facebook that they would respond and it wouldn’t surprise me that by the end of the day it’s shared hundreds of times and we can collect thousands and thousands of dollars.”

The community can also donate by visiting SouthsideFamily.com and clicking the give button. Follow normal tithing instructions but select Houston in the drop down menu.
