MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Labor Day weekend has arrived and many are taking advantage of the three day weekend to travel. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is expecting roads to get busy, which could get dangerous.

According to the Georgia Department of Highway Safety says 13 people were killed on the road last Labor Day weekend. The sheriff’s office wants to make sure this is not a problem this year.

“If you’re taking our interstate system, give yourself extra time,” said Lt. Scott Davis with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office. “Because we’re in the dead center of the state, where I-16 starts and goes East, we have I-475 and I-75, our interstate traffic is going to increase a little bit.”

Make some extra time and watch out for construction.

“In the center of this town, you have the latest construction phases that are going on at the I-16, I-75 interchange,” said Lt. Davis.

Lt. Davis says the speed limit in that interchange is has now been reduced to 55 MPH.

“You have your weather, which is going to be a factor,” said Lt. Davis. “It looks like it’s going to be a factor through this weekend.”

Slow down, drive with caution and make sure both eyes are on the road at all times.

“Kind of help some people out by you paying attention,” said Lt. Davis. “If you’re the example, the other may follow that example.”

The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety also says that last Labor Day weekend troopers made 320 DUI arrests from Friday through Monday.

“You know beforehand that you’re going to be drinking, go ahead and find out who can drive you and take care of you,” said Lt. Davis. “That way everybody is safe and sound.”

The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety says since the start of the 100-day summer travel period, 400 people have died in traffic accidents.

“Make it through a good weekend,” said Lt. Davis. “Once you’re behind the wheel, your job is to drive.”
