MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) -An Amazon fulfillment center is coming to Macon.
The Macon-Bibb Industrial Authority (MBCIA) locked in the deal with the distributing Amazon Tuesday morning.
“It’s just a great opportunity for Macon-Bibb county to have Amazon locate here and bring the amount of investment and jobs that it’s going to bring to Macon, so we are just ecstatic,” said MBCIA Chairman, Robby Fountain.
The $90 million dollar investment is expected to bring more than 500 jobs to the county.
“I still pinched myself this morning when I was getting ready to come in this morning to make this announcement,” said Fountain. “Just could not believe Amazon decided to choose Macon.”
When the industrial authority first started on the project back in April, Fountain says it was almost unreal.
“When we first opened the file and we named it Project Unicorn, I was being funny when I said a Unicorn,” said Fountain. “Because no one’s ever seen one, and I didn’t think we’d ever see one either.”
The 1-million square foot fulfillment center will be built on Sardis Church Road, near I-75. It’s on land MBCIA purchased years ago.
“This goes to show the importance of the industrial authority’s policy of acquiring large attraction, holding them in inventory and holding the cost, the carrying cost so that it’s available when something like this comes to town,” said Macon-Bibb County Mayor Robert Reichert.
“We had Irving Consumer Products just a couple of months ago, Amazon today, I don’t know,” said Fountain. “Always stay tuned to Macon-Bibb County because we’ve got a lot of good things going on here.”
Fountain says the project is moving fast and expecting to construction to begin in the next 30-90 days.
This will be Amazon’s fourth fulfillment center in the state of Georgia.
Newly created jobs will include warehouse, management and supervisory positions.
