MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Macon-Bibb Industrial Authority (MBCIA) is adding to its inventory.
This week it announced that it is buying more property near Avondale Mille Road. All together, it’s 75-acres total.
“Part of our efforts is to always have product in our inventory and our product is industrial land,” said Acting Executive Director, Stephen Adams. “Every major industry that has located here, has located in one of our industrial parks and those industrial parks aren’t created over night.”
Adams says it takes years, sometimes decades to create an industrial park. This new property will be part of doing just that.
The most recent property was sold to Amazon. The distributing company is building a one million square foot fulfillment center on property near Sardis Church Road and Interstate-75.
Amazon first began negotiating with MBCIA about potentially coming to Macon-Bibb County. Then, on October 31st, MBCIA and Amazon locked the deal in. That same day, workers were already on the property moving dirt.
“Very fortunately that foresight of the Macon-Bibb Industrial Authority Board along with our partners at the Macon Water Authority, we have acquired and developed property that’s in our inventory,” said Adams. “So when we get that phone call, we have property to market.”
With new land, MBCIA, now holds more than 1000 acres in its inventory. This could possibly bring more investments and jobs.
“We’re very excited,” said Adams. “We’re hoping to see that continuation of success breading more success.”
Adams says 2017 has been a record year for MBCIA, by bringing $560 million in new investment and more than 1,000 jobs.
In 2017, Star Snacks, Irving Consumer Products, and Amazon have come to Macon. Tyson Foods also decided to expand.
Amazon is expected to be completed by August 2018.
