Bibb coroner offers free New Year’s Eve rides

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) -Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones is bringing in the new year in a van, but he doesn’t mind it one bit.

“I just want to give back to the community,” said Jones.

Jones is offering free rides to anyone who plans on drinking this New Year’s Eve.

“It just doesn’t make sense to put your life in jeopardy or your profession in jeopardy by doing something like drinking and driving, when you have people that will pick you up and carry you to a party and pick you up and bring you back home,” said Jones.

With the help of two other people, Jones will have 3 donated vans that fit 15 people each, driving around town.

“You can either ride in one of these (points to a deputy’s car) or you can ride in a van provided by the coroner and he’ll take you home,” said Macon-Bibb Mayor Robert Reichert. “He’ll keep you out of court, he’ll keep you out of jail, he’ll keep you out the hospital.”

“I’m an elected official and I believe elected officials should stay connected to the community year round,” said Jones.

According to Jones, there were more than 1400 deaths in the state this year. He says we don’t need any more.

“Just call us. We’ll get you there. We’ll get you there safe,” said Jones. “That’s the plan That’s my goal.”

The vans will start picking people up at 5 PM on Sunday and will stop when everyone is home and safe. To reserve your ride, call (478) 256-6716.
