City officials discover hundreds of unpaid storm water utility bills

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) -City officials say hundreds of residents in Warner Robins haven’t been paying their storm water utility bill–not because they were avoiding the payment but because they were never billed at all.

The mix up that started in the city’s customer service billing department has cost thousands of dollars in unpaid fees.

The mayor and council put together a committee to find a solution to the problem and make a recommendation on how to move forward. This morning was their first formal meeting.

“It was just kind of an underlying problem that eventually surfaced and what it was was that by putting it on the utility accounts as long as there was a utility account service in place, billing was fine. Once those utilities were disconnected then nobody was receiving the bill for it,” said Committee Chair Krag Woodyard

Based on city code, the utilities department can bill residents for back payments from up to a year’s time.

Woodyard says because it was their mistake, he will not be making that recommendation to the mayor and council.
