Dempsey Apartments under local management, UDA purchases building

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Macon-Bibb County Urban Development Authority (UDA) bought a historic hotel downtown.

The Dempsey Hotel, what is now, the Dempsey Apartments on Cherry Street, used to be owned by Barkan Companies, a Boston, Massachusetts company.

The UDA will now manage the first floor and the 194 residential apartments.

“It’s a historic landmark. So many historic things have happened her,” said UDA Executive Director, Alex Morrison.

The old hotel currently holds 194 residential apartments and a few stores.

“The plan is to get the building back under control and local management to provide a better life for the residents here and to improve the vitality of all downtown,” said Morrison.

The UDA bought the building for $4 million building and plans to make a few upgrades.

“Improving the lives for the residents, improving the ground floor retail space, being able to make material improvements to the facade and to the overall facility is going to be something that people will notice,” said Morrison.

Morrison is hoping those changes will make an economic impact in Macon.

“This is a win-win,” said Macon-Bibb County Mayor Robert Reichert. “It’s a win. It’s a win for the residents, it’s a win for Downtown and we are thrilled to death with it.”

“This is step one in a much longer process of making so many people’s lives better,” said Morrison.

Plans for the building or its residents will not change. This transfer will just place the management under local leadership.
