MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Dazzling Divas of Macon (FADD), and its sister team in Tampa, are celebrating a huge win.
The team, led by Coaches Rick Calloway and Penelope Holloway, became National Grand Champions during the Buck or Die Competition in Dallas, Texas Labor Day Weekend.
“We have only one huge nation-wide competition, and to be able to win is a great accomplishment by our dancers and for our community. It was like winning the Super Bowl,” says Coach Calloway.
43 dancers from Macon and Tampa competed against 12 teams to win the title. In addition to being National Grand Champions, and winning $3,500, the group also won in Majorette Division I, and the Heavyweight Money Match.
The Dazzling Divas of Macon & Tampa also brought home a 10 ft. lighted trophy and each member will receive championship jackets.
Coach Calloway says being on the national stage was very exciting for the dancers.
“The stage is pretty big with various types of LED lighting to make them feel like the entertainers they are. The really lit up performing on the stage,” says Calloway.
Dianna Williams from the Lifetime show, “Bring It,” hosted the competition. The group will also celebrate their big win in an upcoming photo shoot with the reality TV star.
Before winning the big competition, the team competed and placed during the preliminary competition in New Orleans, and during the regionals in Atlanta.
The team has been around Macon for the last four years. Coach Calloway says students are not only focusing on the art in order to get to the next level.
“They are surrounded by many things that could distract them but they continue to focus excelling in academics, other extracurricular activities, as well as dancing on a nationally winning dance team. We have dancers who have received scholarships to dance studios and dancers who have moved forward in their dance career at their college,” says Calloway.
You may have spotted FADD on the show “Bring It,” and in various parades including The Cherry Blossom Parade in Macon. Coach Calloway says the team expanded, and opened its Tampa location in 2017.
There’s an opportunity for your child to become part of the Dazzling Divas of Macon. Tryouts for boys and girls, ages 5 to 19, will be held Saturday, September 15th at Tatnall Square Park. There’s a $10 tryout fee. Coach Calloway says participants should wear black and white and bring water to the event.
