MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Bibb County School District is seeing improvements in the classroom. That was the message from the district superintendent at today’s State of the District luncheon.
Superintendent Dr. Curtis Jones says the district has worked hard for community relationships, as well as improving test scores and graduation rates.
During today’s luncheon, he addressed achievements and how to carry out even more this school year.
Dr. Jones highlights achievements of academic growth during the State of the District annual report.
With graduation and milestone test scores on the rise, Dr. Jones is also proud of their Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports implementations, or PBIS.
“Every year they go back. It’s just been a focused effort and the work that has come forward, we have seen improvements in student discipline and school climate scores,” he said.
For the 2017 and 2018 school year, administrators from around the state toured Bibb County Schools to learn about the district’s PBIS implementations. 15 schools in Georgia were awarded with the PBIS distinguished schools. Four of which are Bibb County Schools.
Also, a topic of discussion – improving school safety.
“In the 50’s, kids smoked cigarettes. 60’s, they started drinking and now they want to have weapons because that’s what they think it takes to be an adult. That’s just a part of what our culture is doing. We need to address that in a different way,” he said.
Dr. Jones says the district is going back to random searches. The district is also investing in drug and gun search dogs.
“We can’t tell people it’s okay to have as many guns as they do at home, tell them it’s okay to carry guns some place and not expect that to spill over,” Dr. Jones said.
Currently, the graduation rate is at 77-percent. Dr. Jones says the goal is to reach 80-percent. The latest graduation numbers will be in next Wednesday.
Dr. Jones says the district is also working on increasing the reading rate. According to Dr. Jones, 53-percent of third graders read on or above their grade level. He wants to improve that number significantly.
