Lil’ Donald not only performed his hit song “Do Better,” but he encouraged students to do better, too.

For Southwest High students, a rapper coming to their homecoming pep rally was more than a performance.

“For someone to come to our school, one of the lower class schools in Macon, we’re still doing positive things here and we’re still doing bigger and better things,” junior at Southwest Channing Byrd said.

It’s more than just another concert for rapper Lil’ Donald.

“It’s always a blessing to give back to the kids and the youth community and teach them the stuff that we should teach the kids. Domestic violence is not cool. You got to respect and love women,” Lil’ Donald said.

He says he prefers being an “odd ball” and not have lyrics about cars and money, like more rap songs.

“I made the song for a friend of mine, she was in a situation so it was just really a record to help a friend and it turned out to be something that’s helping the world,” Lil’ Donald said.

He’s tied his single into his campaign, “Do Better.” Encouraging kids to “do better” and motivating them to reach their goals.

“The importance was for writing the essay was to bring kids the motivation to do better in school. Like to do better at academics and do better at behavior,” sophomore Jasmine Martin said.

Students participated in his campaign by writing essays, describing ways they can do better and how.

“I can do better at what I’m doing now, so if I want to push myself more, especially as a drum major, I need to have more of a positive influence,” Byrd said.

Winners of the essay contest, Byrd and Martin got a chance to meet Lil’ Donald.

Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m.
