MONTEZUMA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – An old abandoned factory building in Montezuma will soon have new purpose and it’ll come with nearly 100 new jobs.
An American based company bought the property on Travelers Rest Road with plans to turn it into a plastic recycling plant.
Residents are excited to see what this new opportunity does for their little town.
The weeds are overgrown over at the old Southern Frozen Foods factory in Macon County.
“It was 18.3 acres that just sat idle for all these years,” said Macon County Development Authority Executive Director Gerald Beckum.
Its closing in 2013 left the community pretty devastated.
“It’s made us all sad to just be watching as it deteriorates,” said longtime resident Marilyn McClendon.
But that won’t be the case for long with a new company called UPT Group Inc looking to plant its roots in Montezuma.
“This will not only remove a site that has gotten overgrown and looks bad, but it’s going to employ nearly 100 people and it’s a pretty good sizeable investment,” Beckum said.
It’s the kind of economic growth residents like McClendon have been waiting to see happen.
“Gradually through the years things have declined, the farming industry has changed, industry in general has changed,” she said.
Now the county is changing right along with it according to County Manager Regina McDuffie.
“Macon County is an agricultural production county but we also would like to have more diversity and this will bring jobs in the manufacturing type industry,” she told 41NBC.
The plastic recycling plant will send broken down plastics to China and they’ll need plenty of local labor to do it.
“We’re counting on them sprucing the place up making it active and that many people have jobs that don’t have jobs now,” McClendon said.
Beckum says in addition to bringing jobs, the plant will bring recycling services to residents in Macon County since the city and county don’t offer the service. Residents can bring their recyclable items to the plant and they’ll break it down there.
They expect the new plant to open early next year and it could start with as many as 50 job openings.
