MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Local business owners are making it their mission to give away 1,000 turkeys this thanksgiving.
Most people know Overtyme Bar and Grill in Macon as a nice spot to grab a bite to eat and drink after work but on Monday it was more like a community center–serving the needs of hundreds of families as the holiday season approaches.
“It’s a blessing that they’re doing this for someone that’s in need,” said Macon resident Kimberly Sanders. “I was in line for an elderly lady”
Hundreds of people lined up around the restaurant and out the door on Monday.
“It does speak to the need. It speaks to the need that people are actually needing at this time of year. We look forward to this time of year to be able to give back to the community,” said co-owner Charity Harris.
That’s because owners and staff members spent the morning and afternoon handing out hundreds of vouchers for free turkeys.
“It is indeed a blessing to receive a free turkey and it is a nice thing that Mr. Larry at Overtyme is doing for the community to give back to the community,” Sanders told 41NBC.
Co-owner Charity Harris says it’s their fourth year doing the turkey give away and they’ll give more this year than ever before.
“As they’re entering in and going out a lot of people are expressing their sincere thanks and that makes me feel good and overall feel good that we’re doing something that’s actually helping doing something for the community.”
The goal is helping families who may not be able to afford it, have a nice dinner on Thanksgiving day. Harris says Overtime partnered with the Daryl Von Yokely Law Group to purchase the turkeys.
They’ll also be giving out vouchers tomorrow from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at the restaurant located near the intersection of Pio Nono Ave and Eisenhower Parkway. All you need is your ID.
Saturday is when community members who got vouchers can come pick up their turkeys and also bring their kids out for a day of fun, music, games, face-painting, and more free stuff.
