MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Students from schools around Bibb County took some time out of their Thanksgiving break to help families in Middle Georgia.
Westside High School’s Beta Club members and North East High School basketball players put together hundreds of boxes of non perishable foods for the Middle Georgia Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry Project.
Westside English Teacher Dominique Nichols says with several mobile pantries located in schools in the district, it’s all about teaching kids that the need isn’t as far away as they think.
“You never know who you might be helping. It might be somebody you’re sitting in class with. It could be your best friend who isn’t really talking about what they’re needing. So you never want to think that the need is ‘far off’ or that it’s all the way over ‘there’. The need could be very local and personal and we want to make sure that we’re supporting those needs,” he told 41NBC.
Students spent most of the morning and early afternoon packing up boxes and loading them up.
Nichols says he’s challenging other student organizations across the district to step in and help out.
