MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – You may start seeing more of these high tech cars moving through city streets now that there’s an additional charging station soon to be up and running. Tesla is in the process of building a second charging station in North Macon and some drivers and county officials are already excited about it.
“At first we were like are people really going to charge their Tesla in downtown and well–they have,” Urban Development Authority Executive Director Alex Morrison said.
Tesla is now taking Tom Hill Sr. Blvd–or at least a portion of it.
“We’ve had so much demand here in the downtown station that they’re adding a second one,” he continued.
The electric car manufacturer is putting a new charging station in the Batteries+Bulbs parking lot.
“It’s a real benefit to us to have several locations to go to,” Tesla driver Ken Hodges told 41NBC.
Construction Crews were out early Monday morning and afternoon working to install 10 new super chargers to the new charging station.
“Initially, I think we had one in Atlanta and one in Chattanooga. Prior to that it was a long stretch. Tesla got really aggressive with putting more stations in place,” Hodges explained.
Morrison say he believes adding the station will bring more traffic to the area and more revenue to the county.
“While it may not make it an overnight destination, it’ll still make it a destination for people to come make a special stop here and that will generate more sales tax revenue and more eyes of people seeing the progress in Macon,” he said.
Ken Hodges drives a Tesla for a living as a fiber communications sales manager.
“There was a time where Macon just didn’t do it. It wasn’t that it was a bad city it just didn’t have a big draw,” he said.
He says after the first Tesla station was installed, that’s when he began to see what the city had to offer.
“Now I use it as a jumping off point to go to Atlanta a lot. It’s got a Planet Fitness in town so I can work out, it’s got great restaurants, it’s really a great city now. The downtown looks fantastic,” he said.
Putting Macon on the map both literally and figuratively, Tesla is giving its drivers a reason to stop and stay a while.
Tesla has more than 1,300 charging stations through out North America and soon Macon will be home to two. The downtown charging station was the second to be built in the state of Georgia.
It’s been in operation since 2015. We reached out to Tesla for information on when the station would be complete. No word yet on an exact completion date.
