Dublin, GEORGIA (41NBC/WMGT) – A Laurens County 8th grader died in a car crash Sunday afternoon.

Authorities pronounced 14 -year-old Brandon Jones dead at the scene when his 19-year-old brother lost control of the car and ran into a ditch.

Sergeant First Class Mckay Bloodworth says neither of the teens wore seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Charges are still pending based on the investigation.

Principal Reed Waldrep of West Laurens Middle School in Dublin says Brandon was a polite young man with a bright smile.

“The teachers and students loved him and want to start a fundraiser to help the family with any financial strains they may have,” Waldrep said.

He says they don’t know the exact amount of the money raised, but the donations have been overwhelming. Waldrep also says the school has brought in extra counselors and youth pastors to help students and teachers through this difficult time.

The school plans to end the fundraiser and write a check to the family of Brandon Jones on Wednesday.
