CENTERVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- A teacher in Houston County is helping victims of Hurricane Dorian.
Lashan Ferguson is collecting donations at Thomson Middle School to help those in the Bahamas. Ferguson is from the Bahamas and most of her family still lives there.
She stayed in contact with her friends and family. Ferguson says her parents only experienced loss of power and flooding.
However, some of her friends lost everything.
Ferguson says she became overwhelmed when she heard of the hurricane’s track. She now wants to help in any way she can.
Thomson Middle School partnered with other area schools to collect donations for hurricane victims.
“We are an island nation known for tourism and hospitality,” Ferguson said. “It just makes sense that people would want to help us.”
Ferguson urges everyone in the community to donate.
“People are literally starting over from scratch with just the clothes on their backs,” Ferguson said.
Harvest Builders Worship Center also stepped up to help. Pastor Levi Rozier says its the churches job to help those in need.
Ferguson plans to collect donations until September 27. Afterward, she will take them to Atlanta for delivery into the Bahamas.
