MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)– Tribe Salon and Spa in Macon began something special for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Lena Thompson works as a stylist at the Salon and Spa, and she’s also a breast cancer survivor.
“They officially said breast cancer on October 28, 2019.”
After receiving her diagnosis with invasive triple-negative breast cancer, Thompson underwent several surgeries and chemotherapy treatments.
Kaitlyn Cowart, a friend of Lena’s and the salon’s social media manager, says Thompson’s cancer journey inspired her.
“She’s one of the strongest people I know. She’s bubbly, happy, and this cancer did not bring her down one bit,” Coward stated.
Thompson says she’s thankful for the support from family, friends, and organizations like United in Pink.
“United helped me emotionally, physically, and financially,” Thompson said. “They helped with counseling for the kids too… they’re amazing.”
Breast Cancer Awareness Month became a platform for Tribe Salon to do something special, and show their appreciation for not only breast cancer organizations but also those battling and those who have overcome breast cancer.
“One hundred percent of the proceeds for the pink feathers, pink extensions, pink anything goes right back into United in Pink,” Thompson said.
The salon offers pink coloring sessions, pink hairpieces, pink extensions, and pink feathers. Tribe staff hopes by giving people a little pink to wear, that it will help raise awareness.
“It’s so fun too,” Cowart stated. “You’re supporting something so great, but you also get to look super cute with a little pop of pink in your hair.”
Tribe Salon says the pink pride will not stop when October ends. Cowart says they will continue to show support as often as they can.
In addition to pink hair, the salon also reminds all female customers to get mammograms and listen to their bodies. Thompson says she ultimately delayed her care, because she put off getting checked. She says she does not want her clients to do the same.
If you would like pink in your hair, Tribe asks that you call to schedule an appointment. Hair feathers and extension pieces only take about 10 minutes to add.
