(NBC News) Homeowners who suffered damage during recent winter storms may get unexpected news when they call their insurance agents.
Stephen Kates, an insurance analyst with Bankrate.com, says the best way to avoid insurance problems is to prepare.
“If you know a storm is coming, and you know you’re in the danger zone, then taking pictures of your rooms. Taking pictures of your pipes, roof, any areas that could be more in danger, that could save you in the event that you actually have something happen,” he advises.
If that something does happen, don’t hesitate to call the insurer.
Kates says homeowners need to make sure their insurance is up to date, especially with so many home offices upgraded to allow working from home.
