After leading the Mercer University baseball team to a perfect 4-0 record including a sweep of East Tennessee State in the program’s inaugural Southern Conference series, sophomore Kyle Lewis and senior Eric Nyquist were named the SoCon Player and Pitcher of the Week.
Mercer’s Riley Carter and Kirsten Stevens have been named the Southern Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league announced Monday. The selections are made by the Southern Conference office.
Three different Buccaneers recorded a double-double and ETSU held off Mercer, 66-56, in the second semifinal game of the 2015 Southern Conference Women’s Championship, presented by General Shale. The win moves the Buccaneers to 21-10 and advances ETSU to Sunday’s championship game, where it will face top-seeded Chattanooga. The loss ends Mercer’s season at 18-14.
Three players scored in double figures and Mercer shot 50.0 percent from the floor to down Wofford, 75-54, in the final game of the first round of the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Championship presented by General Shale. The win moves Mercer to 18-13 on the season and advances the Bears to Friday’s semifinals where they will face ETSU. The loss ends Wofford’s season with an 8-22 record.
The Mercer University baseball team was picked to finish second in the Southern Conference’s Preseason Media Poll, while finishing third in the SoCon Coaches Poll as released by the conference office today.
Kahlia Lawrence notched her third-straight career-high game with 22 points, while Precious Bridges scored 23, as the Mercer women’s basketball team lost a heartbreaker to ETSU on Monday night at Hawkins Arena.
